It is important to discuss the comments our peers make because it tells us about them. When we see that they say the same things we say, it gives us a feeling of security, knowing a friend may feel the same way.

The extended metaphor is comparing Zinkoff to the car, Clunker Six. It means that Zinkoff can always count on his father, no matter what happens. For example, he says that if he ever springs a leak, his dad will be there with chewing gum and duct tape.
